Research projects are designed to provide indicators, and raise awareness of new developments and risk factors for assessment by policy makers, researchers and others concerned with crime prevention. If you are involved in an ongoing or recently completed research project we would very much like to receive an abstract.
EU funded crime prevention projects
Survey on the level of information among students on risks associated with Internet use
In the study the Romanian Crime Research and Prevention Institute evaluated the project ,,Strengthening the capacity of the Romanian law enforcement agencies to prevent and investigate internet child pornography cases”, initiated in 2010 by the Romanian Police, together with the Norwegian Police. The project aims were to provide more information for target groups (children, parents, teachers) for preventing child pornography online, for this reason the Crime Research and Prevention Institute car

EU Kids Online: Final Report
This project examined European research on cultural, contextual and risk issues in children's safe use of the internet and new media across 21 countries. All project outputs and reports are posted on the related website. Also provided is a searchable database of European research on children's experience online, best practice research FAQs and resources for researching children's internet use.

The Programme for the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union
The Union’s capacity to eradicate gender-based violence is intended to be improved. The creation of a European Observatory to draw up a common diagnosis of the problem, as well as the adoption of a European Protection Order for the victims, will be two essential initiatives that will be advanced by the Spanish Presidency to achieve concrete progress on this matter.

Burglaries in dwellings – Forms of manifestation and prevention methods
The study presented by the Romanian Crime Research and Prevention Institute provides an analysis of the dimensions of burglary in dwellings (frequency of occurrence at national level, its dynamics (2005-2010), rural-urban disparities, territorial spreading etc.). The purpose of the study was to familiarize with this type of offence, with its forms of manifestation and with its influencing factors, in order to identify interventions towards increasing the safety level of citizens.

Developing estimates of the economic costs of crime
The project aim was to develop estimates of the economic costs of crime in Hungary. The researchers were interested in finding out what the costs of crime are to the community, at a social level. Public enquiry on Social attitudes on (road) traffic risks
The research summary from the Romanian Crime Research and Prevention Institute, Public enquiry on Social attitudes on (road) traffic risks, examined car drivers’ attitudes towards traffic risks. The outcomes are supposed to be used to guide the activities on road traffic education. The study was a reiteration of a research conducted 2 years ago, in March 2008, and had the same objectives as the one carried out earlier.

Designing out crime
This case study examines the achievements of a partnership initiated and led by a group of local traders lobbying to reverse the economic decline of their shopping precinct serving a large estate of 3000 households in Mansfield. Vandalism in the rear car parking areas was frightening off customers which in turn was having a knock on effect on the economic and social climate of the whole precinct.

Living and working in areas of street sex work – from conflict to co-existence
This study set out to consider whether residential streets could serve as shared spaces where residents and sex workers could coexist, drawing on research in residential neighbourhoods in five cities in England and Scotland.

Human security for an urban century
The objective of this project has been to examine the nature and scale of organized armed violence in urban areas in Canada and to explore the value of bringing a human security lens to the challenges posed by cities. It is hosted by the Canadian Consortium on Human Security (CCHS) hosted by the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the Human Security Research and Outreach Program supported by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT).

Crime Reduction Basics - tackling crime and anti-social behaviour
The aim is to introduce attendees in a two and a half hour session to the basic principles and techniques used in crime and disorder reduction. Attendees could be tenants' associations, resident's groups, youth groups, neighbourhood watch schemes, open public meetings, sports and social clubs. However everybody who is interested can take part in a session.

Biometric face recognition as a police search tool - "Foto-Fahndung"
The project's aim was to assess the utilisation of commercially available face recognition systems as a search tool for the police with regard to their suitability for comparing live images with reference images in real time. The face recognition system continously extracted picture files of the faces of the persons who passed through the monitored area and compared these with the reference data.

Developing crime sustainable communities through local partnerships
The project's aim is to use Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) and their capability to bring together the key people and agencies to develop their shared agenda and then deliver it. An important task of the LSP is to help those with expertise in these issues to share their knowledge with other organisations and individuals.

Engaging partners
The Safer Stockton Partnership is a good example of collaborative working. Stockton’s Community Safety Plan links with the Community Strategy Youth Justice Plan, medium-term plans for all organisations, who are members of the Safer Stockton Partnership and drug action team plans.

Reach Out
Reach Out engages young people in their penultimate year of compulsory education (year 11) and offers a programme of personal development and extended work experience, with the additional support of a mentor within the workplace. The aim of the Reach Out Project is to assist the regeneration of West Yorkshire by reducing youth crime.

Respect for Nottingham
Nottingham City Centre hit a low point in 2003 when it became impossible for residents to shop without being regularly accosted by sometimes aggressive begging and many streets in the centre had a grubby and dirty appearance. Prostitution was evident around the edges of the City Centre, causing problems for the local residents. The focus was very much on improving the street experience of ordinary people in both the City's Centre and its neighbourhoods.

Safe Secure Homes
Safe and Secure Homes has been established under the Neighbourhood Management thematic programme of the Mansfield Local Strategic Partnership (LSP). To achieve this aim the project set itself the objectives to encourage multi-agency partnerships that would reduce both domestic burglary and the fear of burglary.
